Who This Is For
"Functional — but tired.
Ethical — but conflicted.
Successful — yet uneasy."
Many people recognize the power of the Twelve Steps but assume they apply only to addiction recovery. The 12 Steps for the Rest of Us translates that transformative framework into a universal path for living with honesty, responsibility, and awareness.
This is not a book about perfection, and it does not require religious conformity. It is a book about becoming more whole — for anyone who wants to stop repeating the same patterns, repair harm, and live more truthfully.
No religious affiliation required. No AA membership. No dogma.
A disciplined framework — not abstract advice or positive thinking.
Designed for anyone, not just those in recovery.
From the Preface — in Dean's own words
About ten years ago, I started writing this book after a realization that refused to leave me alone: the Twelve Steps were never just about addiction.
Yes, they saved my life.
Yes, they helped me stop destroying myself.
But that wasn't the real miracle.
The real miracle was this: the Steps taught me how to live honestly in a world that quietly trains us to do the opposite.
They exposed how I lied to myself. How I avoided responsibility while insisting I was "doing my best." How I blamed circumstances, other people, the system—sometimes correctly—while still refusing to look at my own participation in the mess.
Addiction didn't make me special.
It just made the patterns obvious.
And that's when it hit me: if the Steps could transform people at their most broken, most defensive, most desperate, then maybe—just maybe—they could help everyone else too.
Not because everyone is an addict.
But because everyone is human.
— Dean T. Hall, Preface
"This book won't flatter you. It won't rescue you. It won't promise an easy life. It will offer you something more respectful than that: a process that works, if you work it — built on honesty, sustained by hope, disciplined by integrity, and completed by service."

The Complete Series

The core book. Beginning with honesty and hope, and moving through courage, integrity, humility, justice, and service — this book reframes the Steps as a practical system for anyone who wants to stop repeating the same patterns and live more truthfully.

The workbook. A structured space for actual work — not just reflection. Guided exercises and reflection prompts help readers actively work through the steps, turning insight into responsibility and action.

The daily journal. Five minutes a day, 365 days. Step Ten daily inventory pages support a year of daily self-reflection, helping readers sustain the changes they have begun. Includes quarterly review pages.
The Framework
Together, these four practices create a complete system — understood, worked, and lived for the rest of us.
Moving beyond self-deception, reducing avoidance, and discovering the truth about yourself. Honesty is not a virtue to perform — it is a practice to sustain.
Taking ownership of your choices, your patterns, and their consequences. Responsibility is the foundation on which all other change is built.
Making amends and restoring integrity. Repair is not about guilt — it is about making right what can be made right, and releasing what cannot.
Giving back to the well-being of others and the community. Service is the final step — and, paradoxically, the one that sustains all the others.

Early Readers
Most of us are not broken. We are just out of alignment — with our values, with the people we love, with the version of ourselves we know we could be. This book is about closing that gap.
